Professor Chung Chae-kwan
Chung Chae-kwan, a professor of English literature at Incheon National University (President Park Jong-tae), has been inaugurated as the 10th president of the Korean Association for Secondary English Education (KASEE). Chung will lead the conference for the next two years, and his term runs until February 2027.
The Korean Association for Secondary English Education said it plans to establish the direction of Korean secondary English education and strengthen research activities with the aim of improving practical education policies in preparation for the introduction of the 2022 revised English language curriculum and AI digital textbooks (AIDT) to be implemented from 2025.
Chairman Chung Chae-kwan said, "We will do our best to suggest the direction of secondary English education in the rapidly changing educational environment and to ensure that the society plays a leading role in the center of change."
Since its foundation in 2007, the Korean Association for Secondary English Education has established itself as a representative association of Korean secondary English education. In particular, research and policy proposals on major educational issues such as AI-based education innovation, the absolute evaluation of English for the University Academic Proficiency Test (CSAT), and measures to bridge the educational gap are continuously being promoted.
Chairman Chung said, "The paradigm of English education is changing due to the spread of generative artificial intelligence (AI) including ChatGPT and the introduction of AI digital textbooks (AIDT)," and emphasized, "In the midst of these changes, it is an important role of the society to seek an educational direction suitable for the times while maintaining the essence of English education."
The problem of the absolute evaluation of the CSAT English is also one of the major research tasks. The absolute evaluation, which was introduced in 2018, was aimed at reducing the burden of private education, but in reality, the dependence on private education has not decreased, and students' English skills have declined after entering college.
Chairman Chung said, "2025 will be an important inflection point for secondary English education," adding, "We will prepare policy alternatives to supplement the limitations of the absolute evaluation of the CSAT English and strengthen research to respond to AI-based education innovation to lead the development of Korean English education."
The Korean Society for Secondary English Education plans to continue to lead practical changes in the educational field through various studies and policy proposals related to secondary English education.
