The institute contributes to the Society of Sports Science by conducting research on the improvement of physical education, the improvement of sports performance, the promotion of physical activity and national physical fitness, the publication of academic journals, the hosting of academic seminars, the hosting of academic conferences, lectures by renowned professors, and research projects supported by affiliated research institutes.

It was established in 2002 with the goal of systematically researching Incheon's historical, cultural, and social identity, while simultaneously elucidating the realistic dynamism of Incheon society through the humanities and presenting a vision for the future of urban development. It pursues key projects including synthesizing and systematizing the achievements of Incheon research, supporting Incheon researchers and providing resources, and supporting education on Incheon's history and culture. Additionally, it regularly holds academic seminars to conduct in-depth discussions on Incheon studies topics and expand research methodologies. Research results are presented to local and national academic circles through publications such as Journal of Incheon Studies, Professor's Papers, and Incheon Studies Data Series.

The Institute for Unification and Integration at Incheon National University is a comprehensive specialized institution for pre- and post-unification integration equipped with functions such as academic research and education, data center operation, network building, and the provision of social services. Its purpose is to serve as a key hub for preparing for unification. Furthermore, it seeks to ultimately pursue the realization of peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula by establishing sustainable Asian studies and human networks across Asian countries.
